Planning Security Lighting Around Your Home

November 8, 2022 · 2 min read · Updated October 10, 2026

Security lighting should make the places you use after dark easier to see. It can support a broader home security plan, but lighting alone cannot guarantee that a property will be protected from crime. Start with the everyday routes around your home rather than simply choosing the brightest fixtures.

Prioritize entrances and changes in level

Walk from the driveway to the door and consider side access, gates and rear entrances. Note where a person or an obstacle becomes difficult to see. Steps and changes in surface deserve attention alongside the front of the building.

Review glare and neighboring windows

A bright fixture can be uncomfortable when it points toward the viewer. Discuss aiming and shielding with your installer. Consider the views from inside your home and from neighboring properties so the plan addresses visibility without unnecessary spill.

Choose controls for the way you use the property

Motion activation and scheduled operation serve different purposes. Explain when people arrive home, which routes are used regularly and where existing cameras are located. Have the lighting and camera views reviewed together rather than assuming more brightness will improve every image.

Plan your next step

Explore security lighting design and installation. Bring reference photos and questions about your property to the consultation. A clear proposal should explain the work included and give you a practical way to discuss adjustments before installation begins.
